Just the facts, ma'am? The Zip Racing #35 is lapping at qualifying speed with Gerry Green at the helm. An hour ago it seemed mathematically possible to move up one position. The #67 Porsche GT3R in 9th GT seemed to be slowing, with possible transmission trouble. At the rate Green was gaining on #67 it was possible, difficult, but possible to catch and pass them.
But then the halfshaft that had Crew chief Dave Deutch and Engineer Paul Chabris worried failed. It tore up a tire, and forced another major pit effort. Changing out the broken shaft in record time, under extreme duress, the team performed the expected miracle and Green is back in the fray. The only chance now for a position gain is if someone else breaks. The scene in the Zip pit is as different as night from day. Men and women who have been engaged in a concentrated effort for more that 36 hours, some with out a break, much less sleep, have been enervated. It is an extraordinary acomplishment, and a joy in which to have a small role. More soon, and keep your fingers crossed!!! dlm |
